Tambor is a very small fishing village and a gateway to the legendary beaches and breaks of Malpais, Montezuma, Santa Teresa, Playa Cocalito, the Cabo Blanco and Curu Nature Reserves. From Tambor airport you can reach the funky town Montezuma on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, a place where health food cafes, trendy clothing shops and traditional Costa Rican cafes and bars are all lined up along the towns 2 block main street.
Further west, you come to the twin sister towns of Malpais and Santa Theresa. Once only frequented by die hard surfers coming for the consistent beach break that can hold big swells from all directions, this area is now a favorite for high end luxury tourists and Hollywood celebrities. Malpais is the more laid back and sophisticated of the two villages, its beaches are more secluded and with less surf. Santa Theresa to the north is a frequented by a younger crowd looking for waves and fun.

Transportation is difficult in this area, just getting to Tambor requires a 2 hour ferry ride from the mainland that while interesting can be frustrating as the service is intermittent and sometimes with long waits and lines to get cars and people on the boat.
