reasons to visit quepos/manuel antonio
Manuel Antonio’s powdery white beaches
run directly into thick rain forest brimming
with wildlife.
Sloths, macaws and troupes of
four species of monkeys rule the rainforest
canopy. With such intense natural beauty, it’s
no wonder why this region has become one of
the most beloved destinations in Costa Rica.
The forested ridge leading to Manuel Antonio
offers 180 degree views of beach, jungle and
the shimmering Pacific dotted with rocky islets
and secluded bays. Further south in Dominical,
the buildings become few and far between and
the lands flatten out, melting into large waves
that are a big attraction for surfers. The humidity
and rain help keep this area lush and green
year round. The economy that once was ruled
by the United Fruit Company, now depends on
African palm oil and tourism.

quick facts
The town’s name comes from the Quepos tribe that inhabited the area until they were eventually wiped out by the Spanish Conquistadors. For centuries the town was little more than a small fishing community, until the 1930´s when the United Fruit Company built a banana port and populated the area with workers from all other parts of Central America. The town thrived for decades until the Panama disease decimated the banana plantations in the late 1940´s. The fruit company then switched to the less lucrative African oil palms, and the area declined until tourism started growing in the 1980´s.
