Reasons to visit Quepos

Quepos

You need simply to reach the top of the forested ridge on the road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio to understand why this is one of Costa Rica’s top destinations. A 180 degree view of beaches, jungle and shimmering Pacific dotted with rocky islets and secluded bays. The humidity and rain help keep this area lush and green year round.

The beach of Playa Espadilla, just outside the park stretches for more than a mile and is a favorite for surfers, informal soccer games and sunbathers. The northern section is less crowded.

Despite being the most popular park, Manuel Antonio National Park is also the smallest in the country at only 3 square miles. Despite its size, the park is only one of two places in Costa Rica to see squirrel monkeys, red toed sloths and where you can see all four of Costa Rica’s monkey species.

Outside the park, popular activities include sport fishing, surfing, sailing and canopy tours.

Quick Facts

The town’s name comes from the Quepos tribe that inhabited the area until they were eventually wiped out by the Spanish Conquistadors.

For centuries the town was little more than a small fishing community, until the 1930´s when the United Fruit Company built a banana port and populated the area with workers from all other parts of Central America. The town thrived for decades until the Panama disease decimated the banana plantations in the late 1940´s. The fruit company then switched to the less lucrative African oil palms, and the area declined until tourism started growing in the 1980´s.
