What it Takes to Help Save the Planet From the Sky’s

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica—Imagine sitting under a cabana in the middle of a Costa Rican jungle -the only person around to make sure you get on the plane in time is a man with a clip board, then out of nowhere a plane drops out of the sky.  This aircraft is the world’s first carbon neutral plane.  NatureAir, a small family owned airline, has found a way to help save our planet.  Studies show that NatureAir outputs as much carbon dioxide in one year compared to what one commercial jet puts into the air from London to New York City in 10 days!

NatureAir voluntarily compensates 100% of its carbon emissions through the protection and reforestation of tropical forests in southern Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity zones of the Osa Pensinsula. Since 2004, NatureAir has compensated for nearly 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide through the protection of over 200 hectares of tropical forest. The company has also been able to reduce emissions by replacing light bulbs, limiting copy paper, recycling, and improving it’s flight plans in order to conserve more fuel, an improvement of roughly 4% in fuel efficiency per hour of flight.

This airline wants to help prevent further global warming, and keep the beauty of Costa Rica in its natural state.   NatureAir also hopes to prove on a smaller scale that an airline can be sustainable and hopefully excite other airlines to follow. Nature Air tickets range from $89-225 one-way.

Costa Rica Airline is Making History

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA— An airline in Costa Rica gives going “green” a new meaning.  NatureAir is the world’s first and only carbon neutral airline.  Studies show that NatureAir outputs as much carbon dioxide into the air in one year, compared to what one commercial jet outputs in 10 days from New York to London!

In June 2007, NatureAir was recognized by the International Community of Ecotourism for being the first and only airline to voluntarily compensating 100 % of its carbon emissions, thru its conservation of tropical forests.  Because of this the airline is able to protect endangered biodiversity zones encompassing over 65 acres of tropical forests.  NatureAir has also been able to reduce emissions by replacing light bulbs, limiting copy paper, recycling, and using only one airplane engine to taxi along the runway.  If that wasn’t enough NatureAir continues to work with the Costa Rican government to put its company cars on bio fuels, such as vegetable oil.  By going green the company as a whole has been able to additionally reduce carbon emissions by 10 percent.

Since its inception in 2000, NatureAir has grown from flying 18,000 passengers annually to more than 130,000 in 2006.  The company got its start with one plane and 15 employees.  Now it has a fleet of seven planes and more than 150 employees.  It’s the only twin-engine airline in Costa Rica with both scheduled and chartered flights, and offers 74 daily flights to 17 destinations in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama. Tickets range from $89-225 one-way.

The main lodge, housing the restaurant and bar, soars 50 feet and is built of local, natural materials.  During your stay you’ll notice the resort is also a pioneer in sustainable tourism.  Only local workers are employed and the resort is actively working to ensure the rainforest will be preserved into perpetuity.  This adventure includes most meals, activities, lodging and transfers.  The cost of this nine-day package is $2,599 per person.

These eco resorts are not the only ones trying to save Costa Rica’s natural beauty; NatureAir is also the first and only airline to voluntarily compensating 100% of its carbon emissions, thru its conservation of tropical forests.  Because of this the airline is able to protect endangered biodiversity zones encompassing more than 65 acres of tropical forests.
