Reasons to visit Nosara

With some of the best surf breaks around, Playa Guiones attracts a lot of surfers that come back year after year to a beach break known for its consistency and ability to hold swells from all directions.

North along the shore from Playa Guiones sits the crescent shaped bay of Playa Pelada, an intimate beach perfect for swimming and calm waters. Tide pools sit exposed at the right tide and a blowhole adds the perfect exclamation to a day of sunbathing and laying out on the beach. The beach is a landing area for the locals fishing boats and favorite for watching sunsets with a cold beer in hand at Olga’s Beach Bar or the funky La Luna Restaurant.

Ostional National Wildlife Refuge about an hour drive north of Guiones protects one of Costa Rica’s major breeding grounds for olive ridley turtles. Tours are available and most hotels can help you arrange them, the locals are the best source of when the nesting will begin, so ask someone from the area.

The Nosara Yoga Institute is an internationally respected academy which teaches future teachers of yoga and also offers daily courses. The towns of Samara and Garza to the south are fun day or multi-day excursions from Nosara.

Quick Facts

At Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, locals from the area have formed an association to run the reserve on a cooperative basis, and during the first 36 hours of the arribadas (mass nesting) they are allowed to harvest the eggs, on the premise that eggs laid during the this time would likely be destroyed by subsequent waves of mother turtles, or stolen by poachers. It must be working as turtle eggs counts have increased over the last several years.
