Liberia, the region’s charming capital was founded in 1769 and is known as the white city for its whitewashed adobe houses with terra-cotta tile roofs. A perfect example of Liberia’s trademark architecture, go to Calle Real where you will find examples of puertas del sol, double doors, one on each side to catch the morning and afternoon sun. Guanacaste is the only region in Costa Rica to have its own provincial flag. The region celebrates every July its separation from Nicaragua in 1824. This region is still dominated by cowboys and their unique culture. A majority of Guanacastecos make their living as sabaneros or cowboys. The sabaneros are proud folkloric members of the communities, they are known for riding straight-backed in their decorated saddles leading their horses in file in a high stepping gait. The most important days of the year in Guanacaste are celebrated with topes (horse shows) and recorridos de toros (bullfights). Bulls are ridden but never killed.
