Reasons to Visit Golfito

Golfito

The Golfo Dulce is one of only three tropical fjords in the world, the Dulce features 600 foot deep waters in the center of the gulf that attract humpback whales on their northern and southern migrations.

Sport and fly-fishing are popular activities in this region with several outfitters and lodges specialized in offering day and multi-day trips to anglers and fishers of all levels and types. Golfito is also bordered on all sides by primary tropical forests conserved and protected with an abundance of flora and fauna.

The Piedras Blancas National Park to the north of Golfito and adjacent to the Golfito National Wildlife Refuge is an incredible place for bird watchers. The park is covered in verdant forest and is an important wildlife corridor because it connects to Corcovado National Park, and is one of the few places in Costa Rica where jaguars still live.

Quick Facts

Golfito is the administrative center and capital for the southern region.

The town was founded by the United Fruit Company in 1938 and thrived for many decades, with elegant housing and “avenues” for its plantation managers. After United Fruit ceased their operations in 1985, the town slipped back into obscurity until it once again was founded in the 1990’s by surfers, ecotourists, fishers and adventurers.

Taxis and boats are the main source of transportation.
