A coastal town on the northeastern coast of Golfo Dulce, located at the foot of lush green mountains, Golfito was built in the 1930s as a banana port and run by the United Fruit Company through the 1908s.
Today it is an important destination for sport and fly-fishing, eco-tourism and surfers bound for Pavones’s infamous left-break. Golfito is also bordered on all sides by primary tropical forests conserved and protected with an abundance of flora and fauna, much of it protected by the Piedras Blancas National Park and the adjacent Golfito National Wildlife Refuge, an incredible place for bird watchers, and is one of the few places where jaguars still live. The Golfo Dulce is one of only three tropical fjords in the world, with waters reaching depths of 600 feet that attract humpback whales on their northern and southern migrations.

Golfito is the administrative center and capital for the southern region. The town was founded by the United Fruit Company in 1938 and thrived for many decades, with elegant housing and “avenues” for its plantation managers. After United Fruit ceased their operations in 1985, the town slipped back into obscurity until it once again was founded in the 1990’s by surfers, ecotourists, fishers and adventurers.Taxis and boats are the main source of transportation.
